Quinlan Ford wins playoff opener over Van
ROYSE CITY — Turnovers cause upsets and there were some but not many in this game.
Penalties cause upsets and there were some but not many in this game.
When the dust cleared and all was said and done, Quinlan Ford just played lights out, old fashion rock ‘em, sock ‘em football and dominated this Class 3A Division II bi-district championship contest for a 35-14 win over the Van Vandals on Thursday night at Royse City ISD Stadium.
The Panthers came into this game as District 13-3A’s third place team with a 3-6 record and the Van Vandals were riding a 7-3 season record for a second-place finish in 14-3A. Some prognosticators had the Vandals at better than a two touchdown favorite. That meant little if anything to Quinlan Ford.
Ford drove 63 yards in 14 plays to score the opening touchdown. Quarterback Kyle Stone scored on a 7-yard run up the middle on first and goal. Manuel Castilleja kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 20 seconds to play in the first quarter.
The Panthers struck again early in the second quarter with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Stone to Zach Witherspoon. Castilleja kicked the extra point for a 14-0 Panther lead.
Van responded quickly with a 65-yard touchdown run by Tori Parsons. Brad Bogue kicked the extra point to put the finishing touches on the Vandals’ first score.
Quinlan’s Stone passed to Tim Chumley for a 27-yard touchdown with 1:11 remaining in the second quarter. Castilleja added the PAT for a 21-7 halftime lead.
The Panthers upped their lead to 28-7 when sophomore Colten Baxter capped off an 82-yard drive with a 4-yard flip into the end zone and Castilleja tacked on the extra point.
Van scored its last touchdown as time ran out in the third period, capping off a 69-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run by John Dike. Bogue’s kick was good but the drive consumed nearly seven minutes off the clock and Quinlan was not through putting points on the board.
A 34-yard touchdown run by Kevin Stone with 7:37 to play was the final score that would be needed to capture the first bi-district championship for Quinlan Ford since 1995 when the Panthers defeated Sanger 28-3.
The Panthers (4-7) will meet Pittsburg (9-1) at the area round. Pittsburg earned a bye with its District 16-3A title.
