Two run away with Robinson race titles
ROYSE CITY — Greenville airline pilot Charles Douglas and Texas A&M; University-Commerce distance runner Maci Bradford ran away with the men’s and women’s titles on Saturday at the Eighth Annual Stick Robinson Memorial 5K race.
Douglas, who flies for Northwest and Delta, clocked one of the fastest times in race history as he was first overall in 17 minutes, 44 seconds for the 3.1-mile course through the streets of Royse City.
“I think that was my fastest time as a master,” said the 41-year-old Douglas. “So I’m getting into shape.”
Douglas, who ran collegiately for South Plains and Eastern New Mexico, said he was very happy with his time and with the weather, which featured clear skies and temperatures in the mid 50s.
“Perfect running conditions,” he said. “It was nice out there.”
Bradford, who started running competitively in May, clocked a time of 20:34 as the first female finisher. Bradford was still a little tired from running a time trial in the 3,000-meter run on Friday at A&M-Commerce.; She was also sidelined for three weeks with a pulled muscle.
Bradford, who is a freshman from Greenville, is preparing for the Lone Star Conference cross country meet on Saturday in Canyon.
Defending champion John Layden finished fourth overall and won the men’s 21-30 age division with a 19:42 time. His winning time last year was 20:11.
Royse City police chief Tom Shelton won the men’s 51-60 division with a 23:20.
Wynn Posey and Kevin Brannin clocked the fastest times for the one-mile fun run at 6:04.
Trophies went out to the Royse City High School and Royse City Middle School teams for best participation.
The event is named for the late Desmond “Stick” Robinson, a standout running back at Royse City High School and Ottawa University in Kansas. Robinson inspired many with his courage on the playing field and in a long battle against leukemia. Proceeds from the event go toward a scholarship awarded in his name to a graduating Royse City senior.
