GREENVILLE —
The Greenville Lions should see some talented athletes when they entertain the Liberty-Eylau Leopards for a reseason football scrimmage tonight.
Scheduled game times at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium are at 6 for the junior varsity and 7 for the varsity.
Liberty-Eylau had a very talented backfield when the Leopards beat the Lions 32-14 in 2006. The quarterback was Will Middlebrooks, now a rookie third baseman for the Boston Red Sox. L-E’s top running back, LaMichael James, enjoyed a standout college career at Oregon before getting drafted in the second round by the San Francisco 49ers.
Greenville’s head coach Marvin Sedberry said he expects the Leopards will bring some talented athletes.
“Of course,” he said. “I think we’ll get an idea of how to play the game. You’re talking about a program that’s been pretty competitive year in and year out.”
Sedberry is back for his third stint as head coach of the Lions, having coached here from 1992-2000 and 2002-3.
Sedberry said the Lions’ preseason workouts “have been pretty good.”
“We’re making progress,” he said.
The scrimmage format will include 15 plays each by the No. 1 offenses against the No. 1 defenses, 12 each by the No. 2 offenses against the No. 2 defenses and then 15 more each by both teams’ top offenses.
Sedberry said there will be no kicking game in this scrimmage.
This scrimmage is in preparation for the Lions’ season opener at home on Aug. 31 against Princeton.
“It’s going to be one of those deals we will learn what it’s like to be at the varsity level,” said Sedberry. “The main deal is the speed of the game.”
This weekend will be a busy one for most of the other local teams with other preseason scrimmages.
