Leo McDaniel, Jr., is stepping down as head coach of the Greenville Lions’ baseball team.

“I was asked to resign,” said McDaniel. “I will present my resignation on Monday.”

McDaniel said assistant coach Joe Juarez will be taking over as head coach immediately though McDaniel said his resignation would be effective at the end of the school year.

“I’d like to reapply for another position if I can,” he said.

The Lions’ home game scheduled for Friday against Rockwall-Heath was rained out. McDaniel said the game could be moved to Monday at Rockwall-Heath.

“Our place won’t be ready,” he said. “There’s so much water on that field now.”

The Lions are 5-14 for the season and 1-5 in district play after falling 8-0 to Highland Park on Tuesday.

McDaniel is in his second season with the Lions. The Lions finished 9-17 last season with a 3-7 record in District 12-4A.

Juarez previously coached at Gainesville before joining the GHS staff for the 2006-7 school year.

Greenville athletic director Jeff Cordell could not be reached for comment on Friday night.

The Greenville Lady Lions’ home softball game against West Mesquite was also rained out on Friday.

Greenville coach Frank Colvert said the game has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, also at Monty Stratton Field.

The Lady Lions are hoping to break another streak against West Mesquite. They snapped a 39-game district losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Lady Wranglers in the district opener. Greenville has gone 31 innings without a run.
