A&M-Commerce falls to Central Oklahoma, 10-3
EDMOND, Okla. — The Texas A&M-Commerce; football team dropped a 10-3 decision to host Central Oklahoma on Saturday night at Wantland Stadium.
A last-minute drive led by Kyle Westerberg saw the senior quarterback complete five passes down the stretch but his final attempt ricocheted off the hands of A&M-Commerce; wide receiver John Rogers in the end zone and was intercepted by Jake Morton to end the Lions’ bid to send the game into overtime.
Trailing by seven, Westerberg came off the bench and marched the Lions down the field, setting the stage for the final play.
The two teams combined for 331 yards and only 21 first downs.
With the limited offensive attacks, the two teams defenses earned the spotlight. A&M-Commerce; safety Darvin Peterson made a season-high 17 tackles and linebacker Joe Young added 10 tackles.
Linebacker Will Clewis, who made 14 stops, including a sack, led a blitzing UCO defense. The 109 yards rushing are the fewest by the Lions since being held to 89 in a 27-18 loss to Abilene Christian last year.
The Lions fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in LSC games and UCO raises its record to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in LSC games.
Safety Brody Lipsey, who is a junior from Celeste, recorded his second career interception midway through the second quarter to set up a Lions field goal. A&M-Commerce; went seven plays and 15 yards to take a 3-0 advantage over the Bronchos.
UCO tied it on a drive right before the halftime break. After a 31-yard punt by the Lions' Kyle Cook, the Bronchos marched down the field and capitalized on an A&M-Commerce; penalty for the game-tying, 25-yard field goal by Jason Dixon.
Jake Morton’s 41-yard punt return set up what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. Five plays later, Ryan O' Hara connected with Eric Dietz on a 15-yard completion to go ahead 10-3.
The Lions came right back to march down the field to the UCO 11 on a 10-play, 72-yard drive. The Bronchos' defense ended the A&M-Commerce; scoring threat when a Derek McKenzie pass was intercepted in the end zone by middle linebacker Tyler Ellis.
