GREENVILLE —
Brandon Adams and Ben Cuzen ignored the heat as they cruised to victory on Sunday at the 27th Annual Oak Creek Charity Memorial Golf Tournament in Greenville.
The high reached 104 degrees at Oak Creek Country Club but that didn’t stop Adams and Cuzen from shooting a 12-under 60 to finish with a four-stroke victory. They carded a 117 total for the 36-hole tournament including a 57 on Saturday when the temperature was 101.
Adams is a local golfer and Cuzen, who is from Durben, South Africa, played college golf at Henderson State (Ark.) and Arkansas-Little Rock.
Second place at 121 went to Andrew Rainey and Eric Kelly (121). Two teams tied for third with 122s, Brad Gray and Julian Bowers and Chase Johnson and Russell Beasley. Bowers and Beasley are former Greenville High School golfers and Johnson was a standout golfer for Lone Oak High School. Gray played college golf at Eastern New Mexico.
Ed Harrison, who grew up playing baseball for the Herald-Banner Little League team at Bill Betts Park in Greenville, won the first flight with former GHS golfer Mike Morgan. Morgan and Harrison fired two straight 64s to win by two shots over the local team of Steve Harp and Raymond Strickland. Harp was married 18 years ago on the No. 9 green at Wright Park Municipal in Greenville.
Jerry East and Brent Hart fired rounds of 66 and 65 to claim the second flight by three shots with a 131 total. Second place went to the Moore family — Steve and Randy — with rounds of 69 and 65.
Bobby Gray and Durrell Williams shot a 69 on Sunday to overtake Bob Bihr and Sterling Newcomb for the third flight title by a single stroke at 143.
The tournament honored the memory this year of James Williams, a longtime Oak Creek regular who died last August. Proceeds from the tournament benefitted the Hunt Regional Heathcare Foundation.
The tournament was started in 1986 by the family of the late Chris Athens. The event originally benefitted an athletic endowment with the University of North Texas before the family turned over operations of the tournament to Oak Creek in 1996.

Lone Oak runner backs up vow to win Fox Trot 5K
After finishing second in last year’s race, Brandon Womack vowed to return in 2013 and win the Caddo Mills Fox Trot 5K race.
Womack kept his promise on Saturday, winning the 19th edition of the 3.1-mile race in record time: 16 minutes 18 seconds. Womack broke the course record of 16:30.72 set by last year’s winner Barry Hill. Hill, a hometown guy who’d won the last four Fox Trots, did not run in this year’s race, much to the disappointment of Womack. - More Sports Headlines
