GREENVILLE —
The temperature was very hot and so was the competition for Saturday’s opening round of the 27th Annual Oak Creek Charity Memorial Golf Tournament.
The high hit 101 degrees in Greenville, nothing unusual for this 36-hole tournament that’s always held at Oak Creek Country Club during the last weekend in July.
Today’s temperatures are expected to be even higher for the final round. Tee off times are at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the event in memory of longtime Oak Creek regular James Williams, who died last August. Tournament proceeds will be donated to the Hunt Regional Heathcare Foundation.
Local golfer Brandon Adams and his partner, Ben Cuzen, who is originally from South Africa, scorched up the course with a 15-under 57 for 18 holes to lead the championship flight by three shots. Two teams are tied for second with 60s: Brad Gray and Julian Bowers and Andrew Rainey and Eric Kelly.
Mike Morgan and Ed Harrison grabbed the early lead in the first flight with a 64. Tied for second with 65s are Steve Harp and Raymond Strickland, plus the team of commercial photographer Tom Wensel and Terry Davidson.
Two teams are tied for the second flight lead with 66s: Lone Oak-ex Noble Ketchum and Justin Waddle, plus Jerry East and Brent Hart.
Bob Bihr and his partner, Sterling Newcomb, lead the third flight with a 71. Tied for second at 74 are rock music enthusiast Pat Robertson and Charlie Hartford and the team of Bobby Gray and Durrell Williams.
Betty Williams, James’ Williams widow, joined Jerry Kirchman to shoot a 78 in the third flight. James Williams and Jerry Kirchman were longtime friends, dating back to when both were employees of the Herald-Banner in the 1960s.
This event started in 1986 as the Chris Athens Memorial Golf Classic before the Athens family turned the tournament over to Oak Creek in 1996.

Lone Oak runner backs up vow to win Fox Trot 5K
After finishing second in last year’s race, Brandon Womack vowed to return in 2013 and win the Caddo Mills Fox Trot 5K race.
Womack kept his promise on Saturday, winning the 19th edition of the 3.1-mile race in record time: 16 minutes 18 seconds. Womack broke the course record of 16:30.72 set by last year’s winner Barry Hill. Hill, a hometown guy who’d won the last four Fox Trots, did not run in this year’s race, much to the disappointment of Womack. - More Sports Headlines
