Sherman pulls away from Lady Lions

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

GREENVILLE —   Sherman pulled away from the Greenville Lady Lions with nine runs over the last four innings to post a 10-0 District 13-4A softball victory on Thursday at Monty Stratton Field.

  The Lady Bearcats scored one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and five in the seventh.

  Sherman right-hander Katelyn Klug limited the Lady Lions to only two hits while striking out 10.

Katie Threndyle singled in the second while Sidney Tippit doubled in the fourth inning for Greenville’s only two hits.

  Sherman raised its records to 14-10 overall and 7-0 in district, while Greenville fell to 2-6 in 13-4A play.

  Greenville will host Mount Pleasant at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Monty Stratton Field.

“We had a rough night,” said Lady Lions coach Jennifer Rickman. “We have things to work on and well do better Monday versus Mount Pleasant. We’re still in the running for playoffs. We just need to fix some things and we will be there.”

  PARIS — Ty McKinney fired a four-hitter as the Leonard Tigers blanked Paris Chisum 6-0 in District 12-2A baseball.

  McKinney struck out 12 and walked only one.

  Laine Albert led Leonard at the plate going 3-for-4, while McKinney went 2-for-2 with a double.

  CAMPBELL — The Bland Tigers scored 23 runs in the third inning en route to a 39-2 victory over Campbell in District 16-A baseball Thursday.

  Kolton Warren picked up the victory on the mound for Bland giving up only two hits.

  LONE OAK — Chasity Hayden blanked No. 2 state-ranked Mineola on three hits as the Lone Oak Lady Buffs claimed a 5-0 District 18-2A softball victory on Wednesday.

Hayden struck out two and was backed by a defense that turned two double plays.

  Georganna Goodwin and Courtney McCoy both managed two hits to lead Lone Oak, which improved to 7-1 in district play.

  Greenville Christian School swept Dallas Fairhill in a TAPPS District 2-2A doubleheader on Thursday, winning 21-5 and 15-5.

  A.J. Uland fired a two-hitter in the first game, fanning six.

  Uland and Mason Rook both had three hits to lead the Eagles at the plate.

  Nathan Weaks, who struck out nine, picked up the mound win in the second game in relief of Mason Rook. Weaks allowed only one hit and two walks.

  Rue Bowers led GCS at the plate with three hits and Uland had two hits.

  PATTONVILLE, Texas — The Caddo Mills Lady Foxes ran their District 12-2A softball record to 7-1 with an 8-1 pasting of Prairiland on Thursday.

  Mary Moran scatted seven hits as she picked up the mound win. Moran struck out seven.

Moran and Megan Marlborough both had four hits for Caddo Mills and Lexi Tadlock went 3-for-4.

  Phipps walked two and struck out eight in four innings.

  Morgan Gann went 2-for-2 with a double to lead Bland at the plate and Chelsea Medcalf managed Bland’s other hit.

  MELISSA — Pitcher Mary Moran struck out 10 as the Caddo Mills Lady Foxes claimed an 8-5 District 12-2A softball victory over Melissa on Wednesday.

  Moran allowed nine hits and six walks.

   Natalee Wright and Lexi Tadlock led the Lady Foxes at the plate with doubles.

  Chasity Hayden struck out four en route to the mound win.

  Breigh Renner paced Lone Oak at the plate with three hits, while Kaylee Isenberg added two hits.

  MERIT — Ryan Smith drove in three runs off three hits to lead the Wolfe City Wolves to a 12-1 District 16-A baseball victory over Bland on Wednesday.

  Wolfe City improved to 10-8 for the season and 5-2 in district play.

  Bland dropped to 5-11 and 2-5.

      T.J. Hughes kicked field goals of 37 and 30 yards to give the White team a 20-14 victory over the Red in the Greenville Lions’ spring football game on Thursday night at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
      Hughes put the White team ahead for good with the 37-yarder with 8:06 remaining and then added the 30-yarder after Jeremy Myers-Wise’s 7-yard touchdown run was called back because of a holding penalty.

  • A&M-Commerce adds softball to athletic program

      Coming soon, Texas A&M University-Commerce will no longer be the only school in the Lone Star Conference to not have a softball program.
      A&M-Commerce President Dan Jones made the announcement during a press conference held inside the Alumni Center on Monday.
      “I am thrilled about the addition of this program,” he said, mentioning that A&M-Commerce is one of the oldest universities in Texas and the only charter member left of the original LSC. “As long as we’ve been here, we’ve never had a womens softball program.”

  • No. 1 Pilot Point stops Commerce

      Pilot Point’s Skylar Cagle showed why she’s one of the state’s top pitchers while leading the Lady Bearcats to a sweep over Commerce in a Class 2A regional semifinal softball series on Friday night.
      Cagle struck out 22 batters in 14 innings as No. 1 state-ranked Pilot Point won 1-0 and 3-2 to advance to the regional finals. Cagle improved her season record to 23-0 as Pilot Point upped its team mark to 36-2.
      Commerce finished the season with a 27-7 record after advancing the farthest in the playoffs in school history.

  • Commerce Lady Tigers to face No. 1 ranked team

      Tonight the Commerce Lady Tigers will play Pilot Point, the No. 1 ranked softball team in the state.
    But to Commerce Jeff Davidson, it’ll be just another game.
      “It’s still another game,” he said. “It’s their best against our best.”
      The Lady Tigers will face Pilot Point at 6 p.m. in Mount Pleasant at Northeast Texas Community College in the first game of a best-of-three Class 2A regional semifinal playoff series. Game two is set for 8:30 p.m. and if need be, game three is at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

  • Northeast Texas Trail ride planned

      The organizers of the new Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) have scheduled its inaugural event to introduce the multi-use trail to potential users.
      On Saturday at 7 am, teams of cyclists and equestrians will begin separate relays from trailheads in New Boston and Farmersville. The meeting point will be Love Civic Center in Paris (2025 S. Collegiate Dr.). Estimated time of arrival is at 2:30 p.m. Golden spikes will be driven into the ground at various points along the route which was originally a railroad corridor.
