GREENVILLE —
The opponents across the line of scrimmage should look a little smaller to the Greenville Lions in Friday’s football game.
Greenville is traveling to the Frisco ISD Stadium to face the Heritage Coyotes at 7:30 p.m.
“They’re certainly not as big as The Colony,” said Lions coach Marvin Sedberry.
The Colony used a size mismatch to play keep-away with the football during a 21-7 victory last Friday in Greenville. The Cougars had an overwhelming edge in plays (67-29), time of possession (35:51-12:09), total offense (394-115), first downs (23-5) and penalties (15-150 compared to 4-20 for the Lions).
Heritage is 0-2 after falling 45-21 to McKinney on Thursday night. The Coyotes also lost their opener 53-14 to Lucas Lovejoy.
Sedberry described Heritage as a “young program.”
The Coyotes went 4-6 last season after going 0-10 in 2010.
“They’re playing a sophomore quarterback,” he said.
Quarterback Twayne Blackwell went 21-of-32 passing for 143 yards against McKinney. Blackwell was 16-of-29 for 115 yards against Lovejoy and ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
Blackwell is a left-hander with a “quick release,” according to Sedberry.
“You can tell they’ve been playing seven-on-seven,” he said.
Heritage raced up 409 yards total yards against McKinney and 358 versus Lovejoy.
Running back Sean Jones led the Coyotes in rushing against McKinney with 152 yards on 20 carries.
“They’re in the shotgun,” said Sedberry. “Probably about 50-50 run and pass. They have decent size on the front.”
Heritage lines up in a 4-3 formation on defense.
Marquist Davis made his first varsity start at quarterback for the Lions against The Colony, running 41 yards for their only touchdown. Davis finished with 25 yards on nine carries and was 4-of-8 passing for 30 yards.
Jamar Clark led the Lions’ rushers with 60 yards on 10 carries.
