Shortly after his classmate Maddy Crabtree signed to play soccer for the Red Raiders of Texas Tech, De’Arius Mitchell also signed with a team nicknamed the Red Raiders.
But this Red Raider team is with Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and Mitchell has signed to play football. The 5-10, 145-pounder plans to play cornerback for the Red Raiders.
Mitchell played both cornerback and safety for the Lions during the past two seasons. He prefers cornerback but “we had to fill a need at safety.”
Unlike some “cover” cornerbacks, Mitchell enjoys tackling.
“I like tackling more than anything,” he said.
Mitchell was a second-team all-district performer for the Lions at safety during the 2011 season but missed most of the 2012 season with an injury.
He said he learned about Northwestern College after the NAIA Division II university contacted him first.
“They found me,” said Mitchell. “I don’t know how but somehow they found me.”
“De’Arius is an aggressive defensive back who makes up for his size with his aggressive play,” said Northwestern College head coach Kyle Achterhoff. “We look forward to watching De’Arius mature as a player and as a young man at NWC.”
Mitchell said he plans to major in physical education.
“One day I’m trying to be a coach,” he said.
