Last season the Greenville Lions swept Sherman in two games on the way to a playoff spot in basketball.
The 11-12 Lions are hoping for similar success at home tonight against the Bearcats in the third game of a District 13-4A tripleheader. The junior varsity game tips off first at 5, followed by the varsity girls at 6:30 and varsity boys at about 8 p.m.
Greenville beat Sherman home and away last season to finish second behind the Bearcats in the district standings. The Lions badly need a win tonight if they’re to get back into the playoff hunt. They’ve started off the district campaign at 0-4 after falling 64-58 at Denison on Tuesday night.
“The issue right now is consistency,” said Lions coach Marcus Smith.
He said the Lions have improved from the start of the season but are having trouble finishing around the bucket. They missed 20 shots inside the paint against Denison, plus 11 free throws.
Dartannon Wilson led the Lions against Denison with 18 points and Collen Wilburn pumped in 14.
Sherman is 12-13 for the season and 2-2 in district play including victories of 81-60 over Wylie East and 61-60 over Wylie, plus losses of 55-42 to Royse City and 53-45 to Lucas Lovejoy.
The 11-9 Lady Lions also need a win to get back into the playoff hunt. They’re 1-5 in district play following a 42-35 loss at Denison on Tuesday. Greenville led 28-24 heading into the fourth quarter but was outscored 18-7 over the final eight minutes.
“Tough loss,” said Lady Lions coach Lesa Darst. “Got to put it behind us and get ready for Sherman on Friday.”
Elizabeth Rutherford topped the Lady Lions with 15 points while Arian Alford finished with seven points, six steals and five rebounds.
Sherman is 15-9 overall and 4-2 in district play including wins of 58-39 over Wylie, 71-67 over Royse City, 71-47 over Wylie East and 53-37 over Denison. Sherman’s lost 57-43 to Lucas Lovejoy and 62-53 to McKinney North.
It’s a busy night for some of the other teams in the local area. Quinlan Ford’s 18-8 Lady Panthers will take on Rains in Emory. The Bland Lady Tigers and Tigers will battle the Blue Devils of Celeste in Celeste. Leonard will entertain Caddo Mills. Campbell’s Indians will head to Trinidad.
