The 52nd Annual Leonard Holiday Tournament, which starts today, will crown two new champions.
Both Sunnyvale and Celina, the boys and girls tournament champions last year, are not in this tournament.
Sunnyvale outlasted Farmersville 57-38 in the boys championship game in 2011, while Celina claimed a 65-26 victory over the Leonard girls in the other 2011 finals.
The Farmersville Fightin’ Farmers are back and so are the host Leonard Lady Tigers. Farmersville opens at 5:40 p.m. in the Leonard Junior High gym against the Rains Wildcats. Farmersville is 14-2 for the season after beating Leonard 66-55 on Friday. Andrew Simons led the Fightin’ Farmers with 23 points and J’Tyus Clark pumped in 20 points.
Leonard’s Lady Tigers open the tournament at 7 p.m. against the winner of today’s 1:30 p.m. contest between Bonham and Wolfe City.
No. 4 state-ranked Dodd City from Class A will be one of the girls teams to watch. The Lady Hornets open at 10:50 a.m. against Cooper.
Also in the 13-team girls tournament are Life Academy, Rains, Pottsboro, Anna, Caddo Mills, Lindsay, Alba-Golden and Farmersville. Rains, led by 6-6 TCU signee Klara Bradshaw, opens at 4:20 p.m. against Life Academy.
Leonard’s Tigers will open the tournament at 9:20 a.m. today against Wolfe City. Leonard is 9-4 following the loss to Farmersville. Storm Taylor led the Tigers in that game with 18 points, while Matthew Wilson banked in 10 points.
No. 21 state-ranked Whitesboro from Class 2A is one of the the boys teams to watch. The Bearcats are scheduled to tip off at 2:50 p.m. today against Trenton.
Also in the 16-team boys tournament are Anna, Lone Oak, Bonham, Prairiland, Caddo Mills, Whitewright, Quinlan Ford, Dodd City, Pottsboro and Celina.
The tournament continues through Saturday, with the girls championship to start at 7 p.m., with the boys finals to begin at 8:20.
