Cyclists to face Cotton Patch Challenge
GREENVILLE — Racing cyclists will be chasing after more than $8,000 in prize money during the Texas Farm Bureau 2009 Cotton Patch Challenge that starts today in Greenville.
The event includes a road race and time trial today and a criterium on Sunday in downtown Greenville.
The first road race starts at 7:10 a.m. at the Hunt County Courthouse with the category 4 racers competing over a 56-mile distance. Women’s categories 1-3 will race for 65 miles starting at 7:15, followed by the men’s pro 1-2 covering 85 miles beginning at 7:25. The pro 1-2 course will take the racers through Celeste, Leonard, Randolph, Bailey, Wolfe City, Ladonia and Fairlie before finishing near Greenville on Highway 224.
Other road races today include masters 40+ for 65 miles starting at 7:30, masters 50+ for 56 miles at 8:10, junior open 4/5 for 31 miles at 8:15, junior 1-14 4/5 for 21 miles at 8:20, 35+ 4/5 for 56 miles at 8:25, category 3 for 65 miles at 8:30, category 5 for 56 miles at 8:40 and women’s category 4 for 56 miles at 8:45.
The time trials start from Lamar Elementary at 4 p.m. with category 4 starting first, followed by masters 40+, women’s 1-3, category 5, 35 + 4/5, masters 50+, category 3, juniors 10-14 4/5, junior open 4/5, women’s category 4 and pro 1-2. The racers in the time trial will race up and down Jack Finney Blvd. and Farm Road 1570.
The first criterium starts at 7 a.m. on Sunday. The cyclists will race around the Hunt County Courthouse and over the Audie Murphy Overpass.
The event also features tour rides at disances from 63, 58, 41, 31 and 21 miles.
More than 300 racers and 567 tour riders had registered by Thursday evening. Last year’s event set local records for tour riders (723) and racers (264).
