GREENVILLE —
Scott Coffman and Brady Jones pulled off a trifecta with their victory on Sunday in the 15th Annual Dale Weaks Memorial Golf Tournament.
Coffman and Jones shot their second straight 59 to finish with a 26-under 118 for 36 holes at Oak Creek Country Club in Greenville. They won by three shots over the team of Jerry Ransom and Keith Bonham in the event put on by the Greenville Lions Club.
This win was the team’s third straight at Oak Creek, including last year’s Dale Weaks tournament plus the Oak Creek Charity Memorial in August.
“Brady played really good,” said Coffman, whose late grandfather Guy Coffman was at one of the city’s top golfers. “His long driver puts me in position to use my wedges. We both putt real well so it works out.”
Farmers Electric Cooperative sponsored the winning team.
Ransom and Bonham, a former Greenville Lion quarterback, started on Sunday tied with Coffman and Jones but fell three strokes back with a 10-under 62.
The long-hitting Zach Newell and his partner, Matt Neyra, were third with a 124.
Two teams shared first place in the first flight with 126 totals. Ed Harrison joined with Josh Jordan to tie with the duo of Andrew Rainey and Jay Pickens. Rainey and Pickens rallied from a shot down with a 62 on Sunday.
Chris Lawson and Doug Lawson fired two 66s to win the second flight by a single stroke over the team of tennis guru Bobby Castillo and Bob Arden and insurance agents Mike Kubacak and Penni Perkins.
David Weaks, the son of the tournament’s namesake, paired with longtime partner Dillon Duren to win the third flight with a 136. Weaks and Duren fired six birdies on Sunday on the way to a 67 for a 136 total. Weaks plays for the Greenville Lions golf team and Duren is a Sachse Mustang.
Weaks and Duren beat the Moore family — Steve and Gene — by a stroke.
The event is named for a popular local golfer who died in 1997. The title sponsors were Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Co. and Longbranch Dental Center.
