GREENVILLE —
Most of the local high school football teams will be on the practice field early Monday morning as they begin workouts for the upcoming 2012 season.
With very hot temperatures expected to continue through August, most teams are opting to practice in the morning so the players are off the field before the hottest temperatures.
The Greenville Lions will begin their workouts at 7:30 a.m. on Monday under returning head coach Marvin Sedberry. The Lions are scheduled to practice from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Their first scrimmage is set for Aug. 17 at home against Liberty-Eylau. They’ll also scrimmage at Quinlan Ford on Aug. 23 before opening the season on Aug. 31 at home versus Princeton.
Sedberry returns for his third stint as head coach of the Lions and his 13th season with them. He coached them from 1992-2000, then left to coach one season at Dallas Carter. Sedberry coached the 2002 and 2003 Lions before leaving for Bryan. He served the last four years as an athletic director in Alief.
Two former Lion assistant coaches, Darren Duke and Spencer Gilbert, are rejoining Sedberry as defensive and offensive coordinator of the Lions.
The Lions’ coaching staff, including some holdovers from the previous staff, will be trying to turn around a team that has lost its last 20 games. Greenville’s only enjoyed one winning season (6-4 in 2009) since 2003.
“It’s kind of like I always said, ‘It didn’t get broken overnight and we’re not going to fix it overnight,’” said Sedberry. “We’re trying to make improvements and hopefully that shows up in the win and loss column.”
Royse City, which remains in District 13-4A with the Greenville Lions, will also start work on Monday under returning head coach Greg Strahm. The Bulldogs have made two straight playoff trips after moving up from Class 3A.
Commerce, which was an 8-3 playoff team in Class 3A last year, has high hopes after dropping down to Class 2A. Commerce head coach Scott Wells and his staff will be working with seven returning starters on offense and five on defense. Returning quarterback Sam Wells threw for 2,204 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. Wide receiver Buck Wilson and defensive lineman Cortez Crosby earned all-state honors last season.
Commerce is in District 6-2A Division I with local teams Caddo Mills and Farmersville. Steve Sumrow is back at the helm for the Caddo Mills Foxes while Farmersville has a new head coach in Sammy Burnett.
Todd Wallace, who previously was a head coach at Class A Boles, is the new head football coach for the Quinlan Ford Panthers. He was an assistant last year under Virgil Crow.
Derek Smith is the new head coach of the Rains Wildcats, who are joining Ford in District 14-3A.
Bryan O’Neal is back to guide the Community Braves.
The Lone Oak Buffaloes are looking to make another playoff run under third-year head coach Dean Lasseter. They were 8-5 Class 2A Division II regional semifinalists last season.
Leonard is also hoping for a return playoff trip in Class 2A under returning head coach Shane Fletcher.
Longtime assistant Gary Parrish is the new head coach for the Cumby Trojans, who’ll be trying for another playoff trip in Class A.
Gordon Jordan returns to lead the Boles Hornets and Demetrius Rector is back at Celeste.
Longtime assistant Dave Wombaker is now guiding the Greenville Christian School Eagles as they try to return to prominence in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools’ six-man division.
Fannindel and Campbell are also slated to compete in six-man.
