GREENVILLE —
The Greenville Lady Lions’ new head volleyball coach certainly isn’t new to Greenville.
Amanda Marek is a former Lady Lion volleyball and basketball player who also competed in track and field.
“I’m excited to be back,” said Marek, after completing four days of the Lady Lions’ volleyball camp coaching more than two dozen girls.
Marek competed from 1999-2003 at GHS, earning all-district honors in basketball. She went on to play two seasons of basketball at Paris Junior College before completing her bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2008.
Marek has coached the last four years at Long Middle School in Carrollton. This is her first varsity head coaching position.
“I’m ready to get going,” she said. “We’ve got two-a-days starting Monday. I’m all fired up.”
The Lady Lions will practice from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Lions Den.
“I want them to hustle,” said Marek when asked about the style of play she expects from her team. “Be talkative. Work together.”
She’ll also assist Lesa Darst in varsity basketball. Marek played basketball for Darst at GHS.
“Amanda was a model athlete,” said Darst. “Excellent dedication. Hard work. Work ethic. Displayed a disposition to dominate.”
Working as assistant coaches with Marek will be Blanca Saavedra, another former Lady Lion athlete, and Caree McKethan, who is from Rowlett.
Marek is aiming at a repeat trip to the playoffs with the Lady Lions, who’ll face another tough challenge in District 13-4A from Sherman, Denison, McKinney North, Wylie, Wylie East, Royse City and Lucas Lovejoy, a three-time state champion in Class 3A.
“They (the Lady Lions) went to the first round of the playoffs last year,” said Marek. “I want to do that or better this year. Keep it going.”
