GREENVILLE —
The Greenville Lions and Lady Lions hope to improve on last year’s performances as they compete in the District 13-4A track and field meet today and Wednesday in Royse City.
The field events start at 10 a.m. today at Royse City ISD Stadium. The 3200-meter finals commence at 2 p.m., with the running preliminaries set to start at 3.
Wednesday’s running finals will begin at 6 p.m.
Last year the Lady Lions finished seventh of seven teams with just one point earned by Mackenzie Cooper in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet 10 1/2 inches.
Cooper will be back to compete in both events today. She was third on Thursday in the shot put at a meet in Mount Pleasant with a toss of 31-7 1/2 and was fourth in the discus at 87-1.
Kayla Moore was also fourth in the shot put at Mount Pleasant with a toss of 31-6.
The Lady Lions will also be looking for some points from Elcherri Neal in the 100 and 200 dashes and long jump and triple jump. Neal’s father, Henry Neal, has been helping coach the GHS track and field team this season. Neal, who ran for the Greenville Lions and Blinn College, still holds the national high school record in the 100-meter dash (10.15 seconds).
The Lions, who are coached by former GHS and Baylor sprinter Brandon Couts, will be looking for points from their relay teams.
“If we can get the stick around the 4x100 can run possibly a 42 or a 41,” said Couts. “We’ve been having trouble with a couple of exchanges.”
Alfred Champion, Maury Kelly, Kenneth Neal and Erick Quiroz are set to run on the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
The Lions are also hoping for points from Hunter Smith and Chance Hamilton in the shot put.
The Lions finished fifth last year in the team standings with 55 points. Texas High of Texarkana won with 181 points, followed by Sulphur Springs (142), Royse City (91) and Mount Pleasant (84).
Texas High also won the girls team title last year with 211 points, followed by Sherman (115), Denison (109), Sulphur Springs (87), Mount Pleasant (59) and Royse City (38).
