COMMERCE —
The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions took the football field for the last time this spring for the annual Blue-Gold game on Saturday as they prepare to enter training camp later this summer.
The offense ran seven sequences against the defense, scoring once. The defense also scored when junior defensive back Joel Wren returned an interception off junior quarterback Justin Gomez, a transfer from a California junior college, 95 yards for a touchdown.
Both Gomez and sophomore quarterback Ryan Lusby took snaps for the Lions, with Gomez outperforming the sophomore. The transfer completed nine of 13 passes for 95 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Lusby was four for seven for 25 yards. Junior wide receiver Kenzee Jackson, who was injured for the majority of last season, had an impressive 25-yard reception.
“I want to put the team before myself and make sure we get the W,” Jackson said. “After that, hopefully I can be all-conference again, and maybe all-American.”
The defense played well, thanks to strong performances from sophomore defensive back Duke Wheeler (three tackles), senior linebacker Danny Mason (one sack) and freshman defensive back Gage Windsor (three tackles. Junior defensive linemen Jake Williams and Tevin Moore combined for a sack.
Senior running back Wayne Chapman was the most successful, carrying the ball, tearing off a 33-yard run on the third possession. His big run set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Kaylon Alexander.
Chapman led the rushers with 40 yards on five carries.
Tevin Godrey topped the receivers with four catches for 59 yards. Jackson finished with three catches for 30 yards. Hayden Marsh caught two for 13 yards and Nathan James caught two for seven yards.
“We’ve got to get everyone healthy,” head coach Guy Morriss said after the game. “We had a good spring, but we need to get back into the weight room and start to grind all summer long so we can show up in shape. We’re still recruiting, looking for offensive linemen.”
The Lions will begin their season against Southeastern Okla, on Sept. 1.
