GREENVILLE —
Amanda Marek makes her official debut as head volleyball coach of the Greenville Lady Lions as they open their 2012 season tonight in Caddo Mills.
The Lady Lions will play Princeton at about 6 p.m. and then face Caddo Mills at about 7 in the third match of the evening. Caddo Mills and Princeton will square off at 5.
Marek is a former Lady Lion basketball, volleyball and track and field athlete. She competed from 1999-2003 at GHS, earning all-district honors in basketball. She went on to play two seasons in basketball at Paris Junior College before completing her bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2008. She previously coached for four seasons at Long Middle School in Carrollton.
Marek and assistants, Blanca Saavedra and Caree McKethan, have been working with a big group of returnees off last year’s 18-12 team that advanced to the playoffs after finishing third in District 13-4A.
Returning seniors Mackenzie Cooper and Maygan Bloyed were first-team all-district selections last season.
Other returning seniors include Ashley Walden, Jenny Hardaway and Arian Alford.
Senior Maddy Crabtree also has varsity experience.
Sophomore Kalli Moyer was one of the Lady Lions’ top setters last season.
Junior Melanie Callazos and sophomore Savannah Himes were also on the varsity roster last season for the playoffs.
Rounding out the 12-member varsity are Chaundra Jeffery, Kassidy Watson and Lauren McManus.
The Lady Lions tuned up for the playoffs by scrimmaging Terrell, Caddo Mills and Wolfe City on Friday and then Mabank, Wills Point and Sulphur Springs on Saturday.
“I saw some things we needed to work on,” said Marek.
The Lady Lions showed some effects on Monday from playing in six scrimmages during the weekend.
“Practice was a little slow today,” said Marek. “They were tired.”
The Lady Lions face a busy schedule this week with scheduled matches on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Forney tournament.
“We’ve got a lot on our plate right now,” said Marek.
