Two teams tied for Dale Weaks golf lead

GREENVILLE —   Defending champions Scott Coffman and Brady Jones are tied for the lead following Saturday’s first round of the 15th Annual Dale Weaks Memorial Golf Tournament.

Coffman and Jones fired a 13-under 59 on two trips around the nine-hole Oak Creek Country Club course in the tournament that is put on by the Greenville Lions Club. Last year they fired rounds of 62 and 58 to win by a single stroke.

Tied with them at 59 are two veteran golfers who’ve been atop many leaderboards at Greenville tournaments in the past: Jerry Ransom and Keith Bonham.

Tied for third place at 61 are the teams of Brad Gray and Julian Bowers and Brandon Adams and Eric Kelley.

Ed Harrison and Josh Jordan lead the first flight by a single stroke at 63. Tied at 64 are the teams of Andrew Rainey and Jay Pickens and Kent Reeves and Aaron Sids.

Tennis guru Bobby Castillo and his partner, Bob Arden, are tied for the second flight lead at 65. Also tied with them is the team of Nathan Williams and William Strickland Jr.

The Moore family — Steve and Gene — lead the third flight with a 67. Two shots back are the teams of Debbie Sickels and Keith Jacobs and David Weaks and Dillon Duran.

The event wraps up today with tee times at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The tournament is named for a popular local golfer who died in a watercraft accident on Lake Tawakoni in 1997.

The title sponsors for the tournament are Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Co. and Longbranch Dental Center.
