LEONARD —
He’s had tremendous success during his 22-year baseball coaching career, including a state championship in 2007.
Now, after a four-year stint in Farmersville, Craig Coheley is taking his brand to Leonard High School after being hired in late June to coach the Tigers.
In the 2012 season, Coheley led the Farmers to a historical season, winning 30 games (30-9) and reaching the regional finals round in the Class 3A playoffs. Farmersville reached both plateaus for the first time in school history.
However, after four years with the Farmers which included an 89-40-2 record, three playoff appearances and a district championship in 2009, Coheley has moved on. The Farmers finished the 2012 season tied for second in District 11-3A and defeated Dallas Madison, Celina, Sanger and Crandall in the playoffs before falling to eventual state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove in the Class 3A Region II finals.
Leonard’s baseball program has fallen on hard times since the Tigers last made the playoffs in 2007. Since that season, Leonard has not had a winning season and in the last three years — all under departing coach Brody Lipsey — Leonard has a combined record of 22-56-1.
Leonard finished the 2012 season with a 7-13 record overall and a 4-8 mark in league games.
Coheley brings a winning pedigree that could change all of that. He has coached at schools from Class 2A all the way to 5A and was named Class 2A Coach of the Year in 2007 by the Texas Sports Writers Association.
He started his career at 2A Holliday, where he guided his team to the state tournament in 1992 and had a combined 39-9 record with the Eagles. After several years in Wichita Falls, Coheley moved on to 2A Rogers, where he led a team to the state finals in 2006 before winning the 2A state championship in 2007.
In five years at Rogers, Coheley’s record was an impressive 135-34. He left Rogers after the 2008 season to coach at Farmersville.
