QUINLAN — The Greenville Lady Lions whipped Bonham and Cooper on Friday to finish first in the Quinlan basketball tournament with a 4-0 record.
“Our motto this year is to be the best that we can be,” said Lady Lions coach Lesa Darst.
The Lady Lions, now 6-1 for the season, got 19 points from Mackenzie Cooper and 17 from Savannah Himes en route to a 44-24 win over Bonham. Greenville limited Bonham to single digits in each of the four quarters.
Himes also pulled down 10 rebounds and was 7-of-7 from the field.
Maddy Crabtree helped the Lady Lions in that game with eight assists and seven steals.
Elizabeth Rutherford fired in a team-high 19 points in the win over Cooper. Arian Alford added 10 points and Himes finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Crabtree led the defense with five steals.
Darst said the whole team played well during the tournament.
“We had a really good day of basketball on Thursday,” she said, alluding to victories of 76-36 over Ferris and 50-48 over host Quinlan Ford.
Ford beat Cooper 61-30 and Ferris 69-45 on Friday to finish second in the classic format with a 3-1 record.
Ford spread the scoring around among Jessika Keeton (17), Taylor Elrod (15), Jade Patton (14) and Carli Torbert (12) in the win over Coper.
Keeton topped Ford against Ferris with 17 points, while Elrod scored 15, Patton had 14 and Torbert added 12.

WEST MESQUITE — No. 10 state-ranked West Mesquite jumped out to a 36-15 lead in the first quarter and then hung on for a 101-80 victory over the Greenville Lions on Friday night.
“It was the turnovers and the lack of rebounds that really hurt us tonight,” said Lions coach Marcus Smith. “It was just that first quarter that got us behind.”
Greenville kept pace with West Mesquite over the final three quarters, 65-65.
Dartanon Wilson led the Lions and all players with 32 points. Collen Wilburn pumped in 13 and Marlon Mack was next with eight.
Bryalon Rayson topped the Wanglers with 23 points, while Jordon Johnson tossed in 18, Jalen Etienne added 10 and Anthony Walker added 10.
The Lions, now 0-2 for the season, will return home on Monday for another non-district game against former district rival Mount Pleasant starting at about 7:30 p.m.
