GREENVILLE —
One popular summer activity of Texas sports fans since 1960 is reading “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football” magazine and looking ahead to the fall football season.
The 2012 magazine, which is on sale now at local newsstands, gives detailed information about the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, plus about the state’s college football teams.
Another big focus for the magazine is on high school football. Not only does the magazine offer state rankings for each of the classifications but it lists each of the various districts in the projected order of finish.
No local teams were fortunate enough to crack Texas Football’s state rankings for 2012. Dallas Skyline earned the top ranking for Class 5A, while Denton Guyer got the nod in 4A, Stephenville in 3A, Cameron Yoe in Division I 2A, Refugio in Division II 2A, Mart in Division I Class A and Munday in Division II A. The magazine ranked Thockmorton atop six-man football’s Division I and Richland Springs over Division II.
The magazine picked local teams Royse City and Greenville to finish seventh and eighth in the re-shuffled District 13-4A behind newcomer Wylie East, plus Sherman, Wylie, McKinney North, Lucas Lovejoy and Denison. Royse City was a 3-8 playoff team last season. The Greenville Lions were 0-10 but return Marvin Sedberry as head coach for the third time. Sedberry has coached the Lions to eight playoff trips in previous seasons.
The Community Braves of Nevada, who were 0-10 last season, were picked to finish fifth in District 12-3A behind Melissa, Princeton, Anna and Bonham.
Quinlan Ford and Rains of Emory were ranked fourth and fifth in 14-3A behind Wills Point, Kaufman and Crandall.
Commerce’s Tigers, who were an 8-3 playoff team in Class 3A last year, were picked to win District 6-2A, followed by Van Alstyne, Pottsboro, Farmersville (also dropping down), Caddo Mills, Sunnyvale and Howe. Commerce quarterback Sam Wells, who passed for 2,204 yards and 22 touchdowns, earned special recognition.
Lone Oak was tabbed to make it back to the playoffs in 2A. The Buffaloes, who were 8-5 Division II regional semifinalists last season, were picked by the magazine to finish second to Winnsboro in District 7-2A Division I. Trailing Lone Oak in the rankings were Malakoff, Eustace, Grand Saline, Quitman and Kemp.
Leonard was also picked to make it back to the 2A playoffs. The Tigers, who went 5-6 in 2011, claimed the third spot in District 7-2A Division I behind Gunter and Whitewright, with its blue-chip quarterback Tyrone Swoopes. Tom Bean was fourth in the rankings, followed by S&S Consolidated and Bells.
Wolfe City, Boles of Quinlan and Celeste went three, four and five in the rankings for District 8-A, Division I. Honey Grove, back down in Class A for the third year, claimed the top spot, with James Bowie in second.
Cumby’s also expected to make back to the playoffs in Class A. The Trojans, a 6-5 playoff team in 2011, went in the No. 3 spot behind Detroit and Maud. Overton claimed fourth and Union Hill was picked to finish fifth.
Fannindel, which was 6-5 last season, claimed the No. 2 ranking in District 15 six-man Division I behind Leverett’s Chapel. Campbell, starting a new program, was picked to finish fourth.
Greenville Christian School ranked sixth in Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools’ District 2 Division I for six-man behind Dallas Covenant, Watauga Harvest, Rockwall Heritage, Denton Calvary and Dallas Tyler Street.
Farmersville senior defensive end Cyrus Speicher earned special recognition in the magazine for beekeeping, an activity that has gone from a hobby to a business. Speicher owns his own company: Nature’s Bees.
Brock Callaway, who does color commentary on KETR-FM (88.9), wrote the Lone Star Conference preview in the magazine, picking Texas A&M University-Commerce to place eighth behind Midwestern State, Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, West Texas A&M, Tarleton State, Angelo State and Incarnate Word. Eastern New Mexico wound up ninth in the rankings.

Lone Oak runner backs up vow to win Fox Trot 5K
After finishing second in last year’s race, Brandon Womack vowed to return in 2013 and win the Caddo Mills Fox Trot 5K race.
Womack kept his promise on Saturday, winning the 19th edition of the 3.1-mile race in record time: 16 minutes 18 seconds. Womack broke the course record of 16:30.72 set by last year’s winner Barry Hill. Hill, a hometown guy who’d won the last four Fox Trots, did not run in this year’s race, much to the disappointment of Womack. - More Sports Headlines
