GREENVILLE —
Two school record-holders who also earned national recognition in college will be recognized shortly before the Greenville Lions’ home football game tonight.
Shotputter-football player Richard Murray and sprinter Leigh Dickson McCullar are to be inducted into the Greenville High School Athletic Hall of Honor.
Murray holds the Lions’ school shot put record with a heave of 59 feet 11 3/4 inches set in 1974, when he finished second in the state meet by only 1/4 of an inch. He was a two-time district champion in the shot put and a regional champ.
Murray was also a standout defensive football player for the Greenville Lions and Oklahoma Sooners.
Murray played for the Lions from 1971-73, earning all-district and all-Greater Dallas honors. He was selected to play in the Texas High School Coaches Association all-star game and the Oil Bowl.
Murray played on two national championship football teams with the Sooners in 1974 and 1975.
He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1978 and then played for the British Columbia Lions for three seasons in the Canadian Football League and then played three more seasons in the United States Football League with the New Jersey Generals and Washington Federals.
Murray, who now resides in Dallas, also spent many years working with the Boys & Girls Club of Hunt County. He has two daughters, Cecily Camille Murray and Chennel Murray, and a son, Richard Seth Murray.
Dickson McCullar was a state champion in the 800-meter run and in the 4x400-meter relay for the Lady Lions in 1991. Dickson McCullar holds the Lady Lions’ school record in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2 minutes 12.17 seconds, which is also a Region II-4A record. She was also a member of the Lady Lions’ school record-setting sprint medley relay in 1989 and was a district champion in the 400 meters.
Dickson McCullar ran four seasons for the University of North Carolina, earning all-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, plus the 400-meter hurdles. She earned all-America honors in the indoor 4x400 relay and was captain of the Lady Tarheels’ track and field team from 1996-1997.
Dickson McCullar, who now runs 10K races, currently resides in Richmond, Va. She and her husband, Josh McCullar, have two children, Hannah and Seth.

Lone Oak runner backs up vow to win Fox Trot 5K
After finishing second in last year’s race, Brandon Womack vowed to return in 2013 and win the Caddo Mills Fox Trot 5K race.
Womack kept his promise on Saturday, winning the 19th edition of the 3.1-mile race in record time: 16 minutes 18 seconds. Womack broke the course record of 16:30.72 set by last year’s winner Barry Hill. Hill, a hometown guy who’d won the last four Fox Trots, did not run in this year’s race, much to the disappointment of Womack. - More Sports Headlines
