Alicia Keys Lists Glassy-Cool, Empire-State-of-Mind Penthouse for $17.950 Million

- — Forget about moving on up. Singer and New York native Alicia Keys did that a long time ago, trading her childhood residence at the artist-friendly Manhattan Plaza apartment complex in Hell's Kitchen for a slick SoHo real estate market triplex.

Now Keys and her producer husband Swizz Beatz have listed their Crosby Street penthouse for $17.950 million only two years after the couple bought the place from funk/soul/rocker Lenny Kravitz for $12.5 million.

Whether this is just apartment flipping, or whether the charismatic couple with a toddler son in tow is looking for another "Empire State of Mind" kind of dwelling remains to be seen.

But even in New York, where Keys penned an anthem about a city where "concrete jungle dreams are made of,'' the light-soaked apartment was no ordinary celeb crib. With a floating staircase connecting 6,167 square feet of living space plus another 3,000-square feet of terraces, there's plenty to covet -- or envy -- about this downtown dwelling.

According to Sotheby's International, which holds the listing, the apartment boasts 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 4 powder rooms and an enormous state-of-the-art, windowed, gourmet eat-in kitchen with walk-in butlers pantry, and separate formal dining room that faces east and is encased in a glass solarium.

That's only the start of the grand tour of a pad once rented by Nicole Kidman and Denzel Washington. The place also has an expansive living room with fireplace, library/media room are all surrounded by undoubtedly one of the most beautiful private terraces in all of SoHo. Upstairs, there's a separate private master suite complete with spa, pass-through dressing area and private terrace.

For Keys, the SoHo penthouse was quite a step up from the Manhattan Plaza complex where she was raised, looking as she said towards the violent streets of Manhattan off in one direction and the bright lights of Broadway in another. But reality has a way of dulling even those bright lights: On Feb. 27, the IRS filed a $787,985 tax lien against Swizz Beatz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean, with the New York Registrar.
