Back from San Antonio again

The occupants of the Kellar Estate have returned from their annual excursion to San Antonio, a bit sunburned but happy and relaxed.

Coming along for the ride this time around were myself; Vida, my wife and the chief executive officer in charge of vacation scheduling; our daughter Jaylynn, 13; our son Jason, 5; our granddaughter Lauryn, 4; and Ashleigh and Makeva, Jaylynn’s friends and fellow Girl Scouts.

We were also joined during the trip by our son Nick, 22; our friends Stacey and Timberlee and a handful of additional relatives of various ages, bringing our total to 15 vacationers in all.

Actually, that was something of a modest number for us ...

Anyway, our first stop was Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. Always voted as the number one water park in the world, old “Slippery Road” did not disappoint. We got their right at the opening, which meant there were no crowds to speak of for the first couple of hours. But as the day grew warmer, the park began to fill up with others wanting to beat the Texas heat.

We arrived that evening at the Drury Inn & Suites Northwest Medical Center in San Antonio. This has been our home base in the Alamo City for several years now, as they treat us like royalty every time and it is ideally located to all of our tourist destinations. Not only do you get a big, comfortable two-room suite, your breakfast and an evening “happy hour” appetizer buffet is included in the cost, which saved us a lot of time and money.

Tuesday was spent visiting the San Antonio Zoo, the Alamo and taking a private boat tour along the Riverwalk. Yes, during the past 18 years or so we’ve done these same activities multiple times, but it never really gets old and we always seem to learn something new.

Wednesday was spent at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Jason and Lauryn rode just about every single ride available to them, at least once, in 95 degree heat, and yet somehow still had strength to go swimming at the hotel that night. Sigh ...

Thursday was our grand finale, SeaWorld. While we always love to see the shows and set getting soaked by Shamu as our intended vacation highlight of the summer, since it was so hot we spent most of our time in Aquatica, the new and expanded water park. Hey, we just didn’t want to get out of the water.

Friday we packed up and set out for Greenville. Google Maps believes you can make this trip in five hours and 26 minutes. Obviously, Google Maps has never traveled along Interstate 35 through Austin, as we ALWAYS hit a traffic jam there, no matter what time of day.

But, surprisingly, the entire drive was a breeze. In fact, as I drove us through Mesquite, I had visions of setting a new personal record in travel time of five hours and 15 minutes! Until we got to just east of Lake Ray Hubbard, where there was a long line due to construction on Interstate 30.

Still, we made it in about five hours and 30 minutes, so I guess Google was pretty accurate after all.

I will return to work Monday morning, my skin darkened by the sun and filled with stories of how much fun we once again had while visiting San Antonio. And I won’t even get to complain about the traffic.

Just a thought ...
