Vote, but vote informed
It is nice to see some candidates for the positions coming up for election on the City Council.
This will be a nice change and hopefully we will learn something of the candidates and their thoughts prior to election day so we can vote informed rather than by name recognition. I for one will be voting for a council person who will do something to reprioritize the agenda of the council. I would like to see less of us spending taxpayers’ money on things such as rundown railway depots and shooting ranges, and instead more attention spent on things such as the rundown condition of our city streets; and I am not referring to the current fix of slurry seal for one thing. Slurry seal is like putting frosting on a cow pie; it may look good but underneath it is still cow flop. We in Greenville tend to let our infrastructure fall apart before doing something about it such as our storm water system and such and then only upgrade when forced to at a greater cost. Most of our streets show generations of neglect and give a black eye to what we want our city to reflect.
Additionally I would ask that our leadership look long and hard at the purchase of new city vehicles and even the number of those vehicles we do have. I see quite a few sitting in front of private residences and dropping off children at our schools, to name a few items. A realistic study should be made of our payroll and what we pay our employees. Some salaries seem to reflect a city the size of Dallas, not our rural city. And finally, do we really need an assistant city manager for a town our size, or is this just more payroll padding?
Cobisa, Cobisa is dead and should have died long ago. It really had nothing to add to our city except a one-time payment of $1,000,000, which is now worth about $400,000 in today's dollars. The two-year drought several years ago should have shown our leadership what would have happened to our water supply if Cosiba would have been in existence.
Big dreams come at a cost; and so far, while we may be dreaming big, the results are small over the past decade. Perhaps some new blood and ideas will energize the city, and we can progress instead of maintaining the status quo.
Finally, remember to vote, but vote informed.

School prayer in Texas stirs controversy
My son graduated in May from a large public high school in the Dallas area. They didn’t have a prayer at the ceremony, but they did have a moment of silence and an “inspirational reading” before the students walked across the stage.

New requirements for transactions involving gold
My husband and I operate a coin shop in Greenville. One of my customers told me there was a secret tax on gold coins slipped into the recent healthcare bill that will require me to report all transactions involving gold coins or bullion.
