Claude Lewis Davis Sr. was born Sept. 11, 1929, to Witt and Hanna Davis in Josephine. Claude departed this life in Dallas to be with his Heavenly Father on Oct. 4, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Claude Lewis Davis Jr.; one daughter, Shirley Brown; four sisters; one brother and two great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gerlene Davis; six daughters, Barbara and Larry Johnson, Lorine and Charles (Mack) Williams, Lillie Johnson of Greenville, Wilma Faye Owings, Dorothy and Robert Watkins of Dallas and Cheryl Smith of Farmersville; two sons, Milton Davis of Grand Prairie and Bobby Davis of Dallas; 21 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.
Claude married Hazel Hamm in 1954 and to this union six children were born — Claude Jr., Barbara, Milton, Lillie, Lorine and Bobby Davis. He had three daughters with his surviving wife, Gerlene, whom he married in 1970 — Dorothy, Wilma Faye and Shirley.
Claude started singing the gospel at a very young age, traveling all over Texas along with known groups The Loving 5, The Gates of Paradise and numerous known singers in Greenville as well as Dallas.
He was always called upon to visit and bless others with his soprano voice at various occasions, even until his death at the age of 83. His best accomplishment is that he is now singing with the Heavenly Choir. His voice will truly be missed.
Claude’s memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Baptist Church, 721 Manning Street in Grand Prairie (75051).
Visitation will be from 12:45 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Angelyss Funeral Home, 4408 Gaston Avenue, in Dallas (75240).
