Sue Marie “Susie” Spring West, 90, passed away Sept. 13, 2012, at her residence in Mena, Ark. Services are at 2 p.m. today in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel in Greenville with Johnny Palmer and Butch West officiating. Interment follows at Memoryland Memorial Park in Greenville.
Sue was a devoted housewife and mother to two sons and one daughter. Born March 19, 1922, in Hugo, Okla., to John and Ruth Spring, she was a registered member of the Choctaw tribe.
As a child her family later moved to Commerce. There she met William D. “Darrell” West; they were married for 69 years. Her children, whom she adored, were sons William D. West Jr. of Hatfield, Ark., and Johnny L. “Butch” West and wife Lydia of Rosenberg, and a daughter, Sandra Sue West who passed away as a child in Houston.
Susie lived for 10 years in the Houston/Galena Park area where she was a substitute teacher and was involved in the PTA. She also served in her church while living there. They decided to retire in Mena, Ark., in 1970, living quietly in the community since.
She loved to garden and make her famous jellies and fruitcakes for family and friends.
Susie is survived by her husband and two sons; sisters Lois Faye Ingram and Margie Nell Williams; eight grandchildren, William D. “Billy” West III, Johnny Cook, Timothy West, Beau West, John Martin, Clayton West, Lacey West and Patricia Gonzalez; seven great-grandchildren, Skylar West, Johnny L. West II, Denise West, Aaron West, April Cook, Ashley Cook and Zane Cook; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter; sisters Lorene Palmer and Katherine Chilton; brothers Jack Spring, James M. Spring, and Dennis Spring; nephew Jonathan Chilton; and niece Joan Williams.
Pallbearers will be Butch West, Billy West, Johnny Palmer, Ronnie Cambron, James David Williams and Rick Brown.
