Gary Kibler

COMMERCE — Gary Weldon Kibler of Commerce passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 23, 2012.

Born in Fort Worth on Aug. 14, 1939, he was the younger son of F.W. and Annie Reese Kibler. The family moved to San Marcos, Kerrville, Commerce, and Odessa. They later settled on a farm in Campbell. Gary graduated from Commerce High School in 1958.

Gary served his country as a medic in the U.S. Army for two years. He was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado and later at Fort Lewis in Washington.

He married Loretta Bell Horn on Oct. 26, 1963, at Riley Grove Congregational Methodist Church in Commerce. They settled in Campbell where he farmed and ranched for many years.

In 1967, he joined the Commerce Federal Savings and Loan, beginning a career in the banking industry that spanned more than 30 years. He served as loan officer, staff appraiser, vice president and on the board of directors. He ended his career as an appraiser and vice president of loans for Sulphur Springs Loan and Building.

In 1980, Gary and Loretta moved to Commerce where he was active in many community organizations. He served as trustee and is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce, member of the City of Commerce Planning and Zoning Committee, member of the City of Commerce Board of Adjustments, program director for the Hunt County Agri-business Banquet, officer and member of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce, and president and member of the Kiwanis Club of Sulphur Springs.

An avid outdoorsman, Gary and Loretta spent many happy summers in the beautiful mountains of Lake City, Colo., and made many new friends. He created a rock garden back home to remind him of his rock hunting and four-wheeling adventures in the mountains.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta; two daughters, Cindy Redman and husband Jeff of Allen and Dian Underwood and husband Wes of Commerce; five grandchildren, Connor, Alex and Garrett Redman of Allen and Allie and Sam Underwood of Commerce; his brother, Glen Kibler and wife Mary of Wetumpka, Ala.; and many extended family members.

The body will lie in rest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Commerce Funeral Home in Commerce.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church of Commerce.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Gary will be laid to rest with full military rites at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Buel Berry, Gene Casselberry, John Freeman, Bill Furhmeister, Wayne McCasland, Dan Phillips, and members of the Commerce High School Class of 1958.

Arrangements are under the direction of  Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs.
