COMMERCE — Nearby residents would like to honor the memory of our good friend and neighbor, Dr. Joan Echols, who passed away sometime between Feb. 18 and 20, 2013:
Dr. Echols was a retired professor of earth sciences at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce). She leaves no family, but she does leave friends and neighbors who knew her and knew her caring and concerned ways. She was very concerned about her neighbors and the neighborhood in which she lived.
Dr. Echols was very generous with her knowledge of paleontology, gladly showing people the fossils she collected and telling them about them. She made many friends by sharing her knowledge of fossils, especially the fossils in the Commerce area. Many of those friends were children with whom she showed tremendous patience as she answered their questions and responded to their comments.
She loved to travel, often visiting places that interested her as a geologist. She was especially pleased with trips she took to Iceland, where she shared with local geologists her enthusiasm for the Icelandic landscape.
Her neighbors — Mary Pemberton, William Pemberton, Rosalind Tuerk and Richard Tuerk — will miss Joan. We feel privileged to have known her and to have experienced the care she felt for us.
