Mayme Burns

GREENVILLE — Mayme E. Burns, 104, of Greenville died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Briarcliff Health Center. 

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Johnny Hailes and Dr. Marvin Mosley officiating. Interment will be in Miller Grove Cemetery. 

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

She was born in Rains County on August 30, 1908, to Edgar and Mary Strickland English. She graduated from Emory High School in 1927. Mrs. Burns married Hugh Corder Burns in December, 1929.

She earned a B.S. degree from East Texas State Teachers College (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) in 1939 and an M.S. degree in 1959. She taught schoolin Rains County, Wood County and Hunt County for a total of 34 years. Sixteen of those years she taught fifth grade at Houston Elementary School in Greenville.

She was a charter member of Texas Retired Teachers Association and Greenville Retired Teachers Association. She was a lifetime member of PTA.

She was a member of Park Street Baptist Church where she was WMU Director, Sunday School teacher and Senior Adult Director.

Mrs. Burns is survived by a daughter Kay Carol Pemberton and husband Larry of Dallas; son, H. C. Burns, Jr. of Miller Grove; granddaughters, Carrie Shahan and husband Brian of Dallas and Brooke Burns of Greenville; great-grandsons Travis Shahan, Jake Shahan and Trenton Hales. 

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, parents, five brothers and a grandson, Blake Burns.

Pallbearers will be Russ Gorman, Paul Garrett, Rodney Lennon, Woody Gorman, Tracy Goebig and Kevin Houser.
