GREENVILLE —
Our beloved William “Bill” Robert Shorter, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenville on Nov. 10, 2012.
Bill grew up in Tennessee and Texas and entered the US Navy in 1948. The majority of his life was spent working in aircraft maintenance for Braniff International and E-Systems/Raytheon, and he also worked in Instruments and Controls at several nuclear power plant locations including Comanche Peak in Glen Rose.
He was proud to be an American and at one time a Mason. He enjoyed watching old western movies, football, and the Texas Rangers; and most of all he loved being retired and spending quality time visiting with friends and family (including the dogs), playing card games, and working around the house on projects.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Edward Shorter Jr.; his mother, Bessie Lucille Hooper-Ward and stepfather Jimmy Ward; sister Helen Day; and nephews Michael Day and Larry Bell.
Bill leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Helen Shorter of Greenville; a son, Jimmy Shorter and companion Dean Ramsey of Dallas; stepson Jerry Jo McClanahan and wife Gladys of Lake Fork; daughters Leslie Roberts and Sheryl Fletcher of Dallas; stepdaughter Jill Davis and husband Michael of Granbury; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan Hunter; nephew Jeffrie Hunter and wife Esther; great-nieces Rachael and Angel of Ashland City, Tenn,; nephew Robbie Hunter of the Netherlands; sister-in-law Willie Bell of Garland and niece Lan Bell-Vothang; sister-in-law Sammie Stevens of Minnesota and niece Linda Gray and companion Frank Buck of Mesquite; and many wonderful friendships, including Don and Kathy Bullard of Greenville.
A memorial service will be in Bill’s honor on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in remembrance of Bill Shorter to the Memorial Fund, in care of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, 8320 Jack Finney Blvd., Greenville, 75402.
