Ernest Jay Owens, 85, of Rockwall passed away Feb. 10, 2013, at Presbyterian Hospital of Rockwall. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel in Greenville with Rev. Eugene Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Merit Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Born June 10, 1927, in Merit, Ernest was the son of Robert Cleveland and Mary E. (Tankersley) Owens. On Dec. 17, 1948, in Greenville, he married Bennie Delean Pickens. He was a veteran of the United States Army and worked as a construction worker. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his daughters, Brenda Smith and husband Danny of Terrell, Nancy Enos and husband Ricky of Oklahoma City, Okla., Deborah Gutierrez and husband Carlos of Sadler, and Cindy Platt and husband Bobby of Sadler; sister Mary L. Watkins of Temple; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sons Glenn and Bengie Owens, sister Betty Russell, brothers James L. and Edgar Leon Owens, granddaughter Heidi Couch, grandson Andrew Latimer, and great-granddaughter Gabriella Couch.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Dennis, Dalton Moore, Colton Kinsey, Pooh Dennis, Cody Scott, and Ben Dooley. Honorary pallbearer will be Tommy Owens.
