Ray Johnson

GREENVILLE — Floyd Ray Johnson, 76, of Greenville passed away Nov. 18, 2012, at Hunt Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Terrace Baptist Church with Dr. Kelly Carr officiating. Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park.  

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.  

Born June 26, 1936, in Ladonia, Ray was the son of Charlie Thomas and Lora (Stailey) Johnson. On June 29, 1956, in Honey Grove, he married Velma Kathryn Lair. He served in the United States Army National Guard and had owned and operated R & K Rental in Greenville since 1969. On Dec. 4, 1977, he was ordained a deacon and is currently a member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife of Greenville; daughters Glynda Bates of Greenville, Karen Trotter and husband Larry of Forney, and Beverly Sumrow and husband Gregg of Forney; sister Carol Duvall and husband John of Arlington; grandchildren Jarrod Bates, Ashley Bates Hailey, Michael Bates, Kathryn Trotter, Sarah Sumrow and Emma Sumrow; six great-grandchildren; and aunt Lola Purser of Paris.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Peggy Sue Johnson, Betty Grantham, Nell Anderson, and twin sister Flora May Johnson who died at birth; and one great-grandson, Nathanuel Moreno.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Jarrod Bates, Michael Bates and Bobby Hailey; nephews Mark and Lucas Arnold; and cousin Arthur Jones. The deacons of Highland Terrace Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.
