Fowler McCreary

Fowler Harrison McCreary, 88, sweetly passed away Aug. 14, 2012, hand in hand with his loving daughter by his side in his home at Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home chapel, 1910 Hwy. 31 East in Athens, with Rev. Jerry Cotton, officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home

Fowler was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Altus, Okla., to the late Thomas J. and Mary E. McCreary. He proudly served in the Army of the United States from Jan. 26, 1943, through Dec. 1, 1945.

While in World War II  he served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars and the  World War II Victory Medal.

On Nov. 21, 1946, Fowler married the love of his life, the late Lola G. Lane McCreary, to whom he was married as he was always proud to say, “56 years, one month and nine days.” They were both longtime members of the Cayuga Baptist Church in Cayuga. After retiring from Lone Star Gas with 50 years of service, they built a home and  moved to Athens where he lived until moving to Greenville on May 1, 2004, to be close to his daughter.

This unselfish move allowed father and daughter to form the most amazing relationship. Always by his side, they shared coffee every morning, Monday through Friday, until his day of passing.

Preceding him in death are his beloved wife of 56 years, Lola G. Lane McCreary; his parents, Thomas and Mary McCreary; and sisters Loice Penney and Lillie Norman.

He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Kenneth Starling of Quinlan; sister LaVerne Boyd of Mesquite; grandchildren Bryan and Nina Henry of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jason and Jordan Henry of Colleyville, Zachary Starling of Quinlan and Maegan Starling of Weatherford; great-grandaughter Emma Lynne Henry of Honolulu, Hawaii; great-grandson Nikolas Wing of Colleyville; numerous nieces and nephews; and family members of Briarcliff Health Center.

Terri Stanfield (niece)… “What an example of a father loving, caring, supportive and the daughter who so diligently gave her love, caring and support in return. He has taught her great lessons that she carries with her each day. He has lived the example the Christian man who cared not only for his family, but everyone in his path. Not a kinder man on earth nor a sweeter angel in heaven. We will miss him, but only for a short time. He will dwell in the house of our Lord forever. As the Angels sing, the Lord brings this wonderful man home!”

Pallbearers will be nephews Donald Boyd, Ronald Boyd, Jim Kick, Al Kirksey, Kenneth Penney and Johnny Bandy.
