Herbert Lester

— Herbert Wallace Lester, 90, passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2012, in Kerrville.

“Herby” was born Oct. 19, 1922, in  Bogalusa, La., to Francis Herbert and  Herbert Hamilton Lester. Herby was an only child and though deaf from birth, enjoyed a full and happy life.

His mother dedicated her life to him and his disability, becoming a teacher at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Mo. Herby learned to read lips and speak orally. He graduated from public high school and attended Rhode Island School of Design, Clemson University and Mars Hill College where he met his wife, Ola Grace Wilburn. They were married in 1947 and were together until her death in 1999.

Herby was an aeronautical engineer for Convair, LTV and Boeing. He spent many years in the Civil Air Patrol, ranked as colonel, and was an accomplished  pilot.

He is survived by his daughter, Lauranne Glascock; son David Herbert Lester; and grandchildren Aaron Todd Glascock , Kelly Grace Glascock , Allison Nicole Lester and Jason David Lester .

A memorial service will be at the family cottage at Lake Junaluska, N.C., over the 4th of July holiday ... a place he dearly loved.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Carlisle Herbert Cottage Fund, in care of Walter Baskin, 56 Stratford Village Way, Bluffton, S.C. 29909.
