Funeral services for Henry Claude Battle, 83, of Cumby will be conducted at First Baptist Church in Cumby at 2 p.m. Thursday with Bro. Jim Bates and Bro. John Ginn officiating. Interment will follow at Nevada Cemetery.
E.A. Junell will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Cumby.
Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home of Sulphur Springs is in charge of arrangements.
Henry Claude Battle passed away at his residence Monday afternoon, Aug. 13, 2012. He was born March 26, 1929, in Merit, the son of Henry Cabe and Alta Battle of Merit.
He graduated from Merit High School and received a bachelor of science and master of science degree from East Texas State University. He was a retired school teacher. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a deacon in the First Baptist Church. This year he was presented with a dinner and a certification of appreciation for 60 years in Hopkins Masonic Lodge 180. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners of North America. Mr. Battle served as municipal judge for the City of Cumby and was mayor from 1988 to 1992. He married Sallie Bates on Jan. 14, 1961; she passed away Aug. 21, 1969. He married Laverne (Bryant) Swanson on Sept. 6, 1979.
Mr. Battle is survived by his wife; one sister, Eddie Jo Gooch of Dallas; sister-in-law Ottlean Battle of Greenvile; nephews Kyle Gooch and wife Suzy of Plano, Randy Battle of Plano, and Larry Bryant of Caddo Mills; and nieces Karon Battle of Greenville and Vicki Kellough and husband Mike of Caddo Mills.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Juttie Battle; and a nephew, Larry Battle.
