Jimmy Ed Dodwell, 72, of Lone Oak passed away June 17, 2012, at the Hunt Regional Medical Center of Greenville. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home in Greenville.
Ed was born in Travis, Texas on Nov. 17, 1939, to Ray Edward and Jimmie Alfred Patton Dodwell. He married Caroline Jericho on March 1, 1980, in Dallas.
Ed Dodwell founded the Diamond D Ranch in 1981, a 185-acre racehorse training facility located in Lone Oak. In the long history of Diamond D, the training center has generated more than 194 individual Stakes winners, 28 state-bred champions, 302 Stakes wins and 800 third or better Stake races, including Graded Stakes winners and Texas Bred champions Jim’s Orbit and Darby’s Daughter. He recently passed the day-to day operations of Diamond D to his son, Scooter.
Ed was president of the Texas Thoroughbred Breeders Association for four years during which time he served on The Breeders Cup Committee.
In addition he served on the TTBA Board of Directors for nine years and was a life time member of the TTBA, as well as serving as the president of the Lone Star Park Track Chaplaincy from 1994-1996.
In 1990 and 1991 he was honored as co-winner of the TTBA’s highest award, Man of the Year for his tireless efforts serving the TTBA.
In 2006 Ed was award the TTBA T.I. “Pop” Harkins Award for Lifetime Achievement for helping to push through legislation that changed the state tax rate for tracks, helping to bring pari-mutuel racing to Texas and later to revise the simulcasting laws.
His survivors include his wife; son Jimmy “Scooter” Dodwell and wife Jodie of Lone Oak; a daughter, Dawn Dodwell Hofer and husband Jim of Trophy Club; a brother-in-law, Robert Slay of Dallas; sister-in-law Jane Jericho Guerrini and husband Bernard; grandchildren Jana Hofer, Jason Hofer, Brittan Dodwell and Ashleigh Dodwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Linda Gale Dodwell; and three sisters, Imogene Ulicnik, Ray Evelyn Slay and Maxine Janes.
