Richard Avalos

COMMERCE —  Richard Mesa Avalos of Commerce returned home to his heavenly Father on Nov. 9, 2012.

Richard was born on Nov. 19, 1954, to Adolfo “Rudy” and Eva Mesa Avalos in Las Cruces, N.M. He graduated from Las Cruces High School and attended New Mexico State University.

His lifetime of employment included working for Las Cruces City Parks, IBP-Amarillo, New Mexico State University and Texas A&M University-Commerce.

He was consistently recognized for his standard of excellence, attention to details, and willingness to lead and assist wherever he was needed. He will be remembered for his creative artistry with rubber-stamping and numerous creations he gifted to family, friends and acquaintances.

He was an avid collector of music and movies and was passionate about pet care and rescue.

Richard will be remembered as a treasured son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. 

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Guthrie of Commerce; his mom, Eva Avalos of Las Cruces, N.M.; his sons, Adam Avalos (Laura) of Allen, Dwain Avalos (Amy) of Castleberry, Fla., and James Avalos of Seattle, Wash.; brothers Adolfo Avalos Jr. (Tedde) of Conroe and, Edward Avalos of Washington, D.C.; his sister, Terri Singh (Jerry) of Las Cruces, N.M.; his grandchildren; and his nieces and  nephews. 

Richard was preceded in death by his dad, Adolfo “Rudy” Avalos of Las Cruces, N.M.

Richard will live on in  the memories of other family members and numerous friends. 

The Rosary will be recited on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, both at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral in Las Cruces, N.M. The Rite of Committal will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. 

At his family’s request, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of choice.
