Dennis Horner Sr.

LEONARD — Funeral services for Mr. Dennis Mitchell Horner Sr., 90-year-old Bonham resident (formerly of Greenville), are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home chapel at Leonard. Brother Bobby Sparks of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville will officiate. Burial will be in the Leonard Cemetery. 

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Horner was born Oct. 24, 1921, at Prairie Hill, Texas. His parents were Jerry and Bell Horner. He grew up and attended school at Prairie Hill, Hickory Creek and Celeste high schools. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946; he participated in the European Theatre.

 He moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he met and married Dorothy Miller; together they reared four children. He attained his real estate sales/broker license in Antelope Valley, Calif.  He returned to Greenville in 1976 and continued in real estate, retiring in the mid ‘80s.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of Masonic Lodge 335 in Greenville, a member of Scottish Rite Masonry of Dallas and Hella Shriners of Garland. He was a member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville.

He passed away at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans’ Home in Bonham on Oct. 15, 2012.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Bill Caldwell; a son, Dennis Horner Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law Terrie and Don Rizer, Karen and David Smith and Barbara and Leonard Cederburg; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and sisters and one grandson.
