Gerlinde Helga Lewis (nee Zacherl), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, friend and confidant, passed away Sept. 13, 2012, in Freeland, Mich.
She was born May 29, 1940, in Langengeisling, Germany, to Theresa and Hans Zacherl. She was married to Marvin L. Lewis, longtime resident of Quinlan.
Gerlinde was a strong-willed woman with endless energy, who enjoyed running things. She ran a ranch for more than 20 years, collecting animals in need. She adopted stray dogs and cared for horses, chickens, guineas, cats, and many other animals in need. She loved her farm and caring for the animals.
Gerlinde was active in her church (practically running the thing) organizing various programs and leading the ladies guild, building maintenance committee, ordering church supplies and running the gift shop.
Marv and Gerlinde lived in several cities across Europe during their military career. In each new city Gerlinde took charge.
She became the housing coordinator in many cities, finding homes for soldiers moving to the area and teaching them the ropes. She had boundless energy and a love of engaging people.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Marvin Lewis; three children; six grandchildren; a brother, and a cousin.
Her mother, Theresa Zacherl, and her father, Johann Zacherl, preceded her in death.
In keeping with German tradition, we will hold a celebration of Gerlinde’s life. Bring your stories and your smiles and please dress for a party.
A celebration of her life is at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 15, at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, inFreeland, Mich. Per Gerlinde’s wishes, cremation has already taken place.
Friends may call at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington Street, in Freeland today from noon until time of service.
