GREENVILLE —
Although it is expected to feel a lot more like winter this week, the Greenville City Council may spend some time Tuesday talking about a summertime activity.
The Council is scheduled to meet in executive session during Tuesday’s agenda to discuss the Splash Kingdom water park which has been proposed for Greenville.
The regular agenda is set to begin at 6 p.m. inside the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Not much has been said about the Splash Kingdom situation since the water park expressed interest in coming to Greenville two months ago.
The Council voted in October to instruct Board of Development President Greg Sims to pursue a memorandum of understanding agreement with Splash Kingdom, rather than Hawaiian Falls, which had also indicated it wanted to build in Greenville. At that time, Mayor Steve Reid said while the offers from both parks were welcome, the Council chose the to follow-up on the proposal from the Canton-based Splash Kingdom, as the company would contribute more toward the establishment of the park.
Splash Kingdom is wanting to build their fourth water park development in Northeast Texas, to go along with their existing facilities in Canton and Shreveport, La. and a park under construction in Hudson Oaks, Texas.
The Splash Kingdom proposal has been referred to under a code name of “Project Splash” as negotiations with the company have continued.
The Council is scheduled to discuss Project Splash Tuesday under Section 551.072 of the Local Government Code, which allows for a “discussion with respect to the purchase, exchange, lease, or value of real property, when such discussion would have a detrimental effect on the negotiating position of the governmental body.”
The Council is also scheduled to discuss two other items, Projects Partner and Traders Road, under the same section in executive session. No details have been made public concerning the projects.
The Council is set to likewise discuss Projects Splash and Partner in executive session under Section 551.087 of the Local Government Code, which allows for “(1) discussion or deliberation regarding commercial or financial information that the governmental body has received from a business prospect that the governmental body seeks to have locate, stay, or expand in or near the territory of the governmental body and with which the governmental body is conducting economic development negotiations; or (2) to deliberate the offer of a financial or other incentive to a business prospect described by Subdivision (1).”
Should the Council decide to take any action on any of the items discussed Tuesday in executive session, it would return to the regular meeting in order to do so.
