Britain Chevrolet zoning approved

GREENVILLE — One of Greenville’s largest automobile dealerships has found a new place it wants to call home.

The Greenville City Council Tuesday voted unanimously to approve a zoning change and a conditional use permit for Britain Chevrolet, allowing the company to eventually relocate to the intersection of the Interstate 30 service road and Monty Stratton Parkway.

Byron Britain believes the move will be good for both his dealership and the city.

“We are really committed to being here a long time,” Britain said.

Britain Chevrolet was seeking a change in zoning from agriculture and commercial to highway retail for the tract at the southeast corner of Monty Stratton Parkway and Interstate 30, as well as a conditional use permit in order to be able to operate a new automobile sales facility.

Britain Chevrolet currently operates a dealership at 4715 Wesley Street.

Chief Building Official Steve Methven told the Council that the dealership is the first business to receive a highway retail zoning designation, which was created for the areas along the Interstate 30 corridor.

Britain Chevrolet intends to build a 17,000 square foot facility on about seven acres at the site and will work with the city’s staff to provide a master concept plan of the larger tract/

One major hurdle which needs to be addressed is the lack of water and sewer access to the property, as the nearest connections are almost 2,000 feet away.
