Big grass fire ablaze Friday

GREENVILLE — Just because there has been a lot of rain this week doesn’t mean big fires can’t happen.

A three alarm fire occurred just south of Greenville Friday afternoon, fueled by winds gusting out of the south at up to 25 miles per hour and units from multiple fire departments were required to knock it out.

The Lone Oak, Cash, Campbell, Greenville and Point fire departments and the Texas Forest Service responded to the grass/brush fire, which was reported on County Road 3305, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 69, just east of Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport.

Approximately three acres were initially involved and it took about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. No structures were reported damaged.

A cause for the fire was not immediately released.

Hunt County is not currently under a burn ban, although there are still certain restrictions to outdoor burning. The burning of household trash is only permissible during daylight hours and the wind speed cannot be greater then 23 mph. Natural materials, such as brush and limbs can be burned, but not treated or painted lumber. No prohibited material — including but not limited to rubber, plastics, wire, insulation and furniture — can be burned, and a responsible person must be present during active burning.
