GREENVILLE —
The Omni Eagles 4000, a local homeschool robotics team that began in the living room of Amy and Armando Corrales, competed in and won the 2012 VEX Texas State Regional Competition on Dec. 10 in Garland.
Amy Corrales said she was proud to see the small team compete so well amongst the bigger schools.
“It’s incredible for a small little team that started out in our living rooms to go to the world championship,” she said. “Amazing. I’m so proud of the kids and the determination they had.”
According to Armando Corrales, robotics comes naturally to the kids on the team, and provided a good outlet for them to problem-solve.
“We have a group of kids that have a leaning towards engineering,” he said. “And for kids that enjoy problem solving, this proves a good outlet.”
Corrales said the kids enjoy the competitive nature of the event, and are looking forward to the chance to compete in the world championship in Anaheim, Calif., on April 17-20.
“They have shown a great deal of diligence and enthusiasm,” he said. “It has been enjoyable to watch them have fun.”
As well as winning tournament champions in Garland, the team won three other awards, including the Think and Create awards, and a Programming Skills award. Corrales said the reason why the team did so well was becaus they were given the opportunity to.
“I’m grateful for the support of the other mentors on the team that invested the time,” he said. “That’s what helped provide the opportunity for them to excell. We’re all moms and dads. We’re in it for the kids.”
