Two big events to help ring in Christmas

GREENVILLE — Greenville will officially begin the Christmas season with two big events scheduled in two weeks.

The 22nd Annual City of Greenville Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6 in front of the Police and Courts Facility, 3000 Lee Street, and will include the mayor’s holiday welcome, Christmas carolers from a local elementary school and a visit from Santa Claus.

The tree is a towering 30 foot Balsam Fir, which remains lit each night through the New Year’s holiday.

Those arriving early for the event, at 5:30 p.m., will have a chance to decorate Christmas ornaments and to take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage.

The Christmas Tree Lighting countdown begins at 6:30 p.m.

— The annual downtown Greenville Christmas Parade will take place starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec.7. Pre-parade music will be offered by the Phoenix Charter School on the north steps of the Hunt County Courthouse.

The grand marshal for the parade will be 2011 Greenville Worthy Citizen Al Swanson.

Dozens of vehicles, marching bands, floats and equestrian entries will begin the parade at the corner of Bois D’ Arc and Lee Streets; then travel west on Lee Street; south on Wright Street; east on Washington Street and finish at Stonewall Street, turning south to exit downtown.

The theme for the 2012 parade is A Storybook Christmas. All participants must register at www.ci.greenville.tx.us/parade.
