Trial scheduled in Royse City shooting case
Trial is scheduled to begin this week for a Royse City-area man, charged with aggravated assault in connection with a November 2007 shootout with law enforcement officers.
Jury selection is set for Monday morning in the 196th District Court for Johnny Joe Webb, 42, who has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant.
Prosecutors have issued approximately 40 subpoenas for witnesses to testify in the trial, with opening arguments and the start of testimony scheduled Tuesday morning.
The indictments allege Webb fired on two Royse City Police Department officers, as well as five sheriff’s deputies, four from Rockwall County and one from Hunt County.
Webb was hospitalized for almost two months after he was shot by officers answering a call at a residence near the Hunt/Rockwall County line. The officers alleged Webb fired on them first.
Hunt County Sheriff’s Deputies had responded to a domestic disturbance call at around 10:41 p.m. Nov. 11, 2007 when Webb allegedly fired multiple times at the officers from his residence on Bear Hill Road. Rockwall County deputies and a Texas Department of Public Safety officer also assisted, with Royse City officers also on scene securing the perimeter.
The officers returned fire, striking Webb once in the pelvic area.
Officers reportedly had spent about an hour outside the residence attempting to negotiate with Webb before he opened fire. No officers were injured during the incident.
