Local couples joined their counterparts across the world Thursday in celebrating Valentine’s Day.
According to the Wikipedia version, Saint Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote her a letter “from your Valentine” as a farewell.
Of course, these days, people express love to their “Valentines” through the sending of flowers, candy, balloons and other items, and readers of the Herald-Banner were no exception.
Rachel Holland said she and her betrothed both made the day special.
“My fiancé left a cute stuffed lion with a super sweet card for me to find on Valentine’s morning then he wrote me the most thoughtful email,” Holland said. “I snuck into my fiancés office the night before valentines day and decorated it with pink and red streamers, massive balloons, a little stuffed dog and one of those gigantic cards that said, ‘Will you be my valentine? Check ‘yes’, ‘heck yes’, ‘the only option is yes’. He loved it!”
Pearlena Sincebaugh’s Valentine’s Day apparently was more than a little sentimental and romantic.
“My husband left me a beautiful Hallmark card on the table,” Sincebaugh said. “It reads, ‘I’m so glad my heart found you. Happy Valentine’s Day’ Then he hand wrote, ‘Dear Boo, I hope you know how much I love you, you are definitely a challenge and you always make me laugh, every day about something, love Sonny.”
And Craig Combs chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day by long distance, a very long distance.
“I sent my wife a heart shaped red vase with pink and red tulips,” Combs said. “It doesn’t sound like a lot but I’m deployed to the Middle East and I’ve been away from home for six months and still have about three more months to go here.”
