Recyclers arrested in undercover operation

The owners of a Hunt County recycling business have reportedly been arrested and charged with receiving stolen materials.

Sheriff Randy Meeks announced investigators with his office and the Texas Department of Public Safety Regulatory Crimes Bureau conducted an undercover operation Friday at Dub’s Recycling, 10352 State Highway 224 near Commerce.

“Investigators have received numerous allegations that the business was knowingly purchasing stolen property and regulated metals,” Meeks said. “This same location was also contacted by both agencies at the first of this year for some of the same allegations and were warned numerous times.”

Two people —  James Dale Tavener, 58 of Campbell and Jesus Jaime Garza, 39, of Commerce — were arrested and were charged with theft-knowingly purchase stolen material (a felony), demolishers duty-failed to keep record-title (misdemeanor), metal recycler failed to record purchase (misdemeanor), metal recycler failed to furnish report to the Department of Public Safety (misdemeanor).

The business was closed for the day and both subjects were transported to the Hunt County Jail.

“I want all of our local recycling businesses to succeed and prosper, but not at the cost of the law abiding citizen,” Meeks said. “This particular business had been warned several times. The citizens of Hunt County work hard for what they have and should not have to keep replacing their wiring, air conditioners and recyclable metals that are stolen from their property. Theses businesses have the opportunity to assist the citizens in the area by just following the guide lines set by the state.”
